As a general rule, penalties and other
consequences of a misdemeanor conviction are typically less severe
than those of a felony conviction. Usually, a person convicted of a
misdemeanor may still vote, serve on a jury, and practice his or her
profession. The Law Offices of
Jeffrey A. Herzog, P.A. may, in some cases, be able to "plead down" a
felony to a misdemeanor, which will not only minimize the resulting
punishment, but will also lessen the consequences for the future.
A misdemeanor is a
criminal offense
which is punishable by a fine, probation, and / or jail. A
2nd degree misdemeanor is punishable by up to a $500 fine,
six (6) months probation, sixty (60) days jail. A 1st
degree misdemeanor is punishable by up to a $1,000 fine, twelve (12)
months probation, one (1) year jail. Criminal offenses which are
misdemeanors may include certain types of DUI, theft of property
with a value under $300, exposure of sexual organs, among other
offenses.
Misdemeanors may not carry the same
threat of severe punishment and life-long consequences as felonies,
but a misdemeanor conviction can nonetheless be costly, in both
financial and personal terms. If you, or someone you know, are
